“Great! Now we just have to find Ally. How much time do we have left?” Ven asked, looking over at Carumati who was watching the time.

The night was cold, and the black cat trudged through the snow, sinking low every time she took a step. The memories of her past came flooding all over her at once. It wasn’t perfect -they were all in bits and pieces- but they were enough to understand the whole picture.

Chapter 24 - Mansion of Memories
January 1st, 8:11 PM
The house was like a mansion, nestled in among all the little houses. The yard was overrun with weeds which had taken over the neighbors’ yards, reflecting the people who had lived in the house. It used to be lovely, taken care of by a gentle man, a servant of the house. Now the whole thing had been taken over by nature and was considered a bad omen among the people. Everyone had been put under much fear by the inhabitants and now that they were gone, they simply wished it away, pretending that it didn’t exist. Even the houses surrounding it were empty. It was indeed a very sad mansion.

“Hey, do you like Konrad?” I asked Ally one day.
“Huh? Like him? You mean as more than a friend?”
“Yeah. What is Konrad to you?”
Ally’s eyes narrowed in a grimace. “He’s like an over-excited dog who’s invaded my territory.”
“Isn’t that just what you say, though? You really and truly like him, don’t you?”
“.... No. In the end, I think I value our friendship too much to risk liking him and losing him all together. I’m afraid of hurting him to the point where he would never be able to forgive me.”
“What about Ven then?”
“Ven?”
“Yeah! Do you like Ven?”
“Gee... I never even considered him a possibility before. Ven’s always just.... there.”
“You’re so cruel.”
“I’m a cat, what do you expect?”
